Suet

Made from rendered beef fat often mixed with nuts or other bird-attractive ingredients, suet can help attract a wide variety of birds. Like peanuts, suet is a low-mess food which appeals to insect-eating or omnivorous birds like woodpeckers, jays, bushtits, chickadees, and nuthatches more than the mostly vegetarian house finches and goldfinches.

Suet is a high-energy, pure-fat substance that supplements birds’ daily diet year-round and is particularly helpful when finding insects to eat is difficult. All of our suets and no-melt suets contain high-quality ingredients, providing critical fats and calories and making every trip to the feeder count.

Although suet is sometimes thought of as a winter-specialty food, it can be offered successfully all year round. However it's also true that in winter suet becomes even more attractive to birds needing to replenish calories lost just keeping warm during cold temperatures.

WBU suet is rendered to help remove some of the impurities that can cause spoilage. 

 

* HOT TIP! *

Try freezing your suet overnight before putting it in the feeder! This will make the cake contract, making it less messy and allowing it to fit in the cage more easily while reducing waste.

No-Melt vs Regular Suet: What's the Deal? 

No-melt Suet is designed to be offered when seasonal temperatures are above 35ºc, and can withstand temperatures up to 54ºc!

  • To keep it all together, no-melt suets are rendered at a higher temperature to help them withstand the sun. All the mix-ins have also been pulverized and blended together with the fat, creating a suet block that's sturdy enough to withstand almost any summer heatwave!

Regular Suet is designed to be offered when temperatures are below 35ºc.

  • Sometimes considered the "full-fat" variety, regular suet consists of rendered beef fat combined with a variety of mix-ins. It's high in healthy fats and protein which makes it the popular choice for winter feeding.
